Accommodations in college are very different than in K-12 schools. In college, students typically advocate for themselves and choose what accommodations they think are important. Also, you are not pressured or required to use your accommodations if you do not think it is necessary at that time!
Here are my accommodations and why they are important/useful for me:
Personal Aid: This allows me to have a personal aid/caregiver to be on campus and in the classrooms with me.
Disability Related Absence Makeup Assignments Without Penalty: If I am absence due to my disability, and inform my professor and disability office, my absence is excused and I can makeup the assignments without penalty.
Printed Material: Any printed material must be provided to me electronically in the beginning or before class.
Inclement Weather Exception: If the weather makes it unsafe for me to get around campus in my wheelchair or unsafe to travel from home, I am excused and can try to attend virtually.
Extended Time for Testing: Due to faster fatigue, it takes longer for me to complete a test.
Testing: Alternate Location: Due to getting extended time and need help getting set up, I test in a different location.
Devices: Smart Phones, Laptop and Tablets, smart pens: I am allowed to use technologies to complete class. I can record lectures, type on my computer and iPad for notes, and take pictures of the board.
Preferential Seating: i work with the professor each semester to determine the best place for me to sit in the classroom.
Adjustable Desk: I get an adjustable height desk in any room I will be using regularly.
What accommodations do you think are most beneficial?
