In episode #4, my good news segment was focused on a quick technology accessibility tip from me, so I decided that I would do this blog post talking about more tech tips that will make your life easier and more independent. Technology has made disabled people's lives so much easier. Throughout my 22 years, I have seen technology evolve and help countless people, including myself.
Here are three technology devices that might help you become more independent:
Amazon Echo
I mentioned the usefulness of the Amazon Echo in my good news segment of the podcast, but I will also be including it here! I was gifted an Amazon Echo years ago, because the person who gave it to me knew that I love technology. I only used it for music, alarms, fun facts, etc., but never for anything that benefitted me in terms of accessibility. Then, a company sent me a care package and included was a new Amazon Echo and a set of smart plugs. Once I figured out that I could control the lighting in my room with my voice, I never turned back. My room is almost completely controlled by smart bulbs and smart plugs.
2. Adaptive Gaming Controllers
If you ever play video games, you know that many games can be very taxing on movement and energy. Since I have gotten older, I have had to quit playing certain games because they have become too much for me. When I was younger, I was fortunate enough to be able to grip and use the console-standard controllers, because adaptive controllers were not really a thing or were too expensive. Now, most of the gaming console companies sell their own adaptive controllers. Also, many companies sell different variations of adaptive controllers. AbleGamers is a major company in the adaptive gaming world. They have countless different controllers, buttons, and devices to give disabled individuals an opportunity to play video games.
3. Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
Smart glasses have been around for a while, but Ray-Ban and Meta have created the best pair, so far. These glasses not only allow you to record video with just your voice, but you can also answer the phone hands-free. Being able to talk on the phone, record a video, livestream to social media, recieve and send text messages, and listen to music without using your hands is a game-changer for accessibility.
